Alan with the UEFA Cup, May 1972

May 17, 1972 – the definition of glory, glory night as we lifted the UEFA Cup at White Hart Lane, a poignant night for Alan Mullery, who reflects on that triumph with Martin Chivers, two-goal hero from the first leg.

After one of the club’s best-ever results in Europe to overcome Italian giants AC Milan over two legs in the semi-final, Bill Nicholson’s men lined-up against fellow English side Wolves in the final, again over two legs.

The first leg, held at Molineux on May 3, 1972, went to plan as Martin netted twice – including a thunderbolt second goal – to hand us at 2-1 advantage.

The return leg was at the Lane on May 17, 1972. This time Alan, captaining the team, scored a brave header early in the tie to hand us a 3-1 advantage.

Wolves equalised through David Wagstaffe but we held on to become the first side to lift the UEFA Cup in its inaugural year.

We also became the first British team to win two different European trophies after our Cup Winners Cup win in 1963. We made history that night as well, the first British team to lift a European trophy.

The second leg was one Alan will never forget as he scored the goal, lifted the trophy and was then chaired around the pitch by jubilant fans.

As it turned out, that was also Alan’s last match for us – he moved to Fulham in the summer.

Back to the first leg, and Martin has no doubt as to where his second goal on the night stands in his career.

„I remember I was getting a bit of a rollicking from Alan, he was screaming for the ball down the touchline, but I walloped the ball and it flew into the back of the net,“ recalled Martin, third in our all-time top goalscorers list.

„It was the best goal I’ve ever scored and the hardest shot I’ve ever hit.

„I remember thinking to myself ‘if that’s on target, it’s got a chance’ and if it had been at the goalkeeper, it might have taken him in with it as well. I hit it as hard as I hit everything.“

Alan admitted he didn’t want Martin to shoot. „It was late in the game and as he lined it up, I shouted ‘no’ to him,“ he said.

„He ignored me on the overlap, and I shouted ‘you…great goal!’ I was about to give him a rollicking!

„Martin was brilliant that day, he led the line beautifully, scored both the goals and that was typical of him.“

Alanwas left stranded on the pitch at the Lane after the trophy presentation – and had his own lap of hour with 5,000 fans!

„We didn’t know it was going to be Alan’s last game, so it was a wonderful way to go, to do it like that,“ added Martin.

Alan said: „The old cliché is, if you are going to go out, to go out at the top and I’ll never forget that – the last game I played for Tottenham, I captained and scored the goal to win the UEFA Cup.“

Adam made his debut in our final game of the season.

Adam Smith couldn’t hide his delight after making his first team debut in the season’s finale against Fulham.

The young full-back, 20, came on for the final 15 minutes for injured Younes Kaboul.

Usually seen bombing up and down the right touchline, Adam admitted he ‘kept it simple’ and looked comfortable on his first appearance.

Taken to immediately by the crowd – as our Academy graduates always are – the England Under-21 international soon heard the chants of ‘there’s only one Adam Smith’ ringing around the stadium.

“It was brilliant to come on for my debut,” beamed Adam. “I’ve waited a long time for it and I got a great reception from the supporters. I’m buzzing about that.

“I’ve trained with the first team so I know all the lads well, that gave me confidence

“I didn’t want to do anything too much, I just wanted to keep it simple,” added Adam, who scored a 35-yard belter during his loan at MK Dons earlier in the campaign.

“It’s great to get a win and hopefully we’ll take our place in the Champions League next season.”

Ledley King insists our fans can play a huge part in Sunday’s thrilling finale against Fulham.

Victory over the Cottagers at White Hart Lane will guarantee fourth place and will mean that Arsenal will have to win at West Brom to hold onto third.

Newcastle, still in the mix and a point behind in fifth, travel to Everton.

Ledley, our longest-serving player, knows better than most about the atmosphere created on these crucial days at the Lane and is calling on the fans to raise the roof again.

“Fulham are always a tough team to play against but we couldn’t have asked for a better scenario than playing at home on the final day of the season, in front of our fans,” said the club captain.

“I think playing at home could make a big difference with our fans giving us that extra push.

“We have a good record at home and it’s a great opportunity for us. We don’t want to let them down.”

Ledley suspected that our destiny this season would go to the final day.

“We always knew that it would probably go down to the last game and that’s how it’s turned out,” he added.

“We’re in a good position and have a great opportunity to secure fourth place – and maybe even finish third.”
